2nd Trimester (weeks 14-26) Week 21

About You

Week 21 is the eighth week of the 2nd trimester. You should be feeling comfortable but not too big - relax and enjoy this period while you can, as the third trimester brings on a host of new little complaints. This is the time to think about things you will need for your baby.

Increased oil production may contribute to the development (or worsening) of acne. If that's the case, wash well with a gentle soap or cleanser twice a day, and make sure that any moisturizer or make-up you use is oil-free. Don't take any oral acne medications (as some are very hazardous during pregnancy) or use any topical acne products without first checking with your practitioner. You may also be prone to varicose veins now, as there is more pressure on the veins in your legs coupled with higher progesterone levels which may cause the walls of your veins to relax (which can make the problem worse). Keep in mind that you are more likely to get varicose veins if other family members have them. Also, they tend to get worse with each successive pregnancy and as you age. To help prevent or minimize varicose veins, exercise daily, put up your feet and legs whenever possible, sleep on your left side, and wear maternity support hose. You may also notice so-called spider veins (a group of tiny blood vessels near the surface of your skin), particularly on your ankles, legs, or face. They may have a spider-like pattern with little branches radiating out from the centre, but they don't cause discomfort and usually disappear after delivery.

About Baby

Baby is now about 26.67cm long and weighs about 340 grams. Baby’s eyebrows and eyelids are present now and if you are having a girl, her vagina has begun to form as. Your baby will also be very active – with fully-fledged kicking like a Kung Fu fighter, which can be at times uncomfortable, and this activity will start to follow a pattern.

This week’s activities for the pregnancy to-do list

✔Create a baby registry or make a baby gift wish list, if having a baby shower. Even if you don't like the idea of asking for specific gifts, family and friends will soon be asking what you need or want — particularly if someone's throwing you a baby shower. If you prepare a gift registry, you'll know exactly what to tell them. Two common mistakes to avoid are registering for clothing (you will get plenty of these) and not registering for big ticket or expensive items. You won't be seen as greedy, but rather many shower guests like to go in on a "big gift" together such as your work colleagues or close family.

✔Get organized and tackle pending projects around the house

✔Research the pros and cons of breastfeeding. Decide what's best for you and your baby once you have all the facts

✔Buy some support hose if veins are a problem, and a new maternity bra – again
