CHANGING BABY
by The GoToddler Team

There was a time not long ago when we cleaned a baby’s bottom with a ‘normal’ baby wipe, maybe applied a bit of barrier cream and put on a ‘standard’ nappy, wrapping up the dirty disposable nappy in a plastic shopping bag. My how things have changed! Now Mums are spoilt for choice, with the vast array of wipes, nappies, creams and disposable systems available

WIPES

The range of baby wipes has proliferated over the last few years, with manufacturers categorising them into two main groups – lightly scented and unscented. These two types have other attributes such as, for sensitive skin, alcohol free, chlorine free, soap free, hypoallergenic, biodegradable, organic, made from bamboo or flushable. While they all sound different, they nearly all have one thing in common - they are ‘enriched’ with something to help sooth or clean baby’s delicate skin, with aloe being the most popular soothing additive. The two latest trends of all these wipes are ‘eco-friendly’ (that is, biodegradable, chlorine free or made from natural fibre) and fully flushable, which is a real bonus for travelling or toilet training. Even bigger children like the flushable wipes, as they clean more easily and effectively than regular toilet paper. The following is a short list of some of the more popular brands of baby wipes: Unscented Huggies is enriched with aloe Vera and vitamin E. These are extremely popular as they are available in refill packs of 240, 160, pop-up tubs and flat travel packs of 16. Huggies Newborn & Sensitive is extra thick and extra soft, available in refill packs of 144. Curash Baby Care, contains ingredients to protect against nappy rash. Pampers Simply Clean contain chamomile extract Pigeon Organic wipes contain organic extract additives including chamomile and rosehip to help prevent skin irritation. Wotnot is organic, 100% biodegradable and compostable, enriched with organic aloe Vera. Unlike many other wipes, they are free from the ‘not-so-natural’ ingredients such as sulphates, petrochemicals, parabens, caustics and glycols. Seventh Generation is chlorine free (free of dyes) containing a plant extract as a natural cleaning agent. This also contains aloe Vera and vitamin E. Pure Wipes are 100% biodegradable compacted all purpose wipes that expand with water- great for travelling. The packaging is also degradable Lightly Scented Huggies is enriched with moisturising Shea butter and are available in refill packs of 240 and 160. Johnson’s baby skincare lightly scented is enriched with Johnson's baby lotion Curash Baby Care contains ingredients to protect against nappy rash. Pampers Simply Clean smells of citrus and contain citric acid to provide stability and pH balance. Pampers Sensitive is enriched with Aloe & Chamomile. Gaia Bamboo baby wipes are organic and 100% biodegradable. They contain organic extracts such as aloe, lavender and chamomile flower, as well as lemon oil and green tea. Clearly Herbal contains aloe, tea tree oil and green tea, with aromatherapy benefits of lavender and chamomile. Clearly Herbal Bamboo has similar additives to the regular Clearly Herbal wipes and is formulated for sensitive skin, made from bamboo cloth that is 100% biodegradable. The Wiggles Toddler Wipeshave a fruity fragrance and are completely flushable.

NAPPIES
Choosing what type of nappy to use is usually determined by two factors. Firstly, to use disposables or cloth reusables. Secondly, the level of absorbency provided. While there are environmental issues associated with disposables, they are still by far the most popular, because they are compact, easy and great for travelling. Huggies are the most popular and are economical when bought in their bulk mega boxes. UK made Pampers, popular in Europe, is a relative newcomer to the Australian market and users of this brand claim they are the most absorbent of all brands (keep in mind that supermarkets buy their Pampers made in Mexico). Babylove is increasing in sales , but it is the two main ‘eco-nappies’ Moltex and Seventh Generation that are emerging as real alternatives to other major brands. German made Moltex has a 100% chlorine free pulp core and 50% biodegradable materials and the packaging is compostable. US made Seventh Generation are chlorine-free and hypoallergenic. Both are fragrance and latex free and fans of these nappies say their children don’t get nappy rashes when using them. Modern cloth nappies, are becoming popular because they are pre-folded, come in trendy colours and have many benefits. Firstly, they are cheaper in the long run, don’t contribute to household waste and long term environmental damage, and statistically, children will be toilet trained sooner (let’s face it, who wants to empty and clean cloth nappies for longer than they have to?!). If you do decide to go this way, shop around and ask existing users their opinions. The two biggest problems with these types of nappies seem to be fit and absorbency. Baby Beehinds offer nappies made from natural fibres of bamboo and hemp, and sell brightly coloured pull covers to match any outfit. They also sell wet bags, to hold a wet or dirty nappy until you get home

NAPPY CREAMS

Nappy creams are an essential extra when a baby is in nappies. Because a baby’s bottom is almost always covered, the skin is susceptible to fungal and bacterial infections in a moist environment. Remember, if you use disposable nappies, change them more often than recommended on the packaging, and try to allow your baby’s bottom to be nappy free for at least 1 hour every day (after number 2’s is a good time). This way, the skin is allowed to dry, helping prevent nasty problems. If your baby does have a rash, it has to be treated straight way as an untreated rash can quickly degenerate into a disaster. If your baby does have a rash, washing with warm water and bicarbonate of soda is a preferred option to using a wipe. Dry thoroughly, even using a very gentle warm blow from a hair drier to make sure the area is completely dry (this technique is also great for female thrush). If a medicated treatment cream is required (such as Bepanthen Antiseptic Cream or a prescription cream for serious rashes), this is applied next, before a protective barrier cream, such as Sudocream, Curash and Burt’s Bees Diaper Ointment (the active ingredient being zinc oxide). Don’t confuse ‘barrier’ creams with ‘soothing’ creams – they are different. Barrier creams prevent moisture penetration and are applied last, while soothing creams provide relief for redness and irritation, such as Gaia’s natural, organic Skin Soothing Lotion for relief of redness and irritation. Some products offer a 2-in-1 cream that both protects and soothes, like Bepanthen Nappy Rash Ointment and Burt’s Bees Skin Crème. Remember with creams, they are more often used when a rash is present. However, if your baby’s bottom looks perfect, leave it, or dust lightly with a bit of cornstarch baby powder, such as those from Johnson’s, Curash, Gaia or Burt’s Bees

DISPOSING OF NAPPIES

Mums of yesterday used to carry around plastic shopping bags to throw away disposable nappies – not anymore. Now, there are more hygienic, convenient methods of disposal that are an indispensible item in any parent’s baby bag. Gel Pack Nappy Sacks are a naturally degradable, odour neutralising bag with special handles to contain used disposable nappies and wipes. BabyU is another popular nappy bag but if you want a more natural product, Wotnot is unperfumed, biodegradable and compostable. In recent years, home disposable systems have become popular, with the Tommee Tippee Nappy Wrapper being one of the better products. Basically, the system works by way of a nappy bin, which is fitted with a roll of nappy bags. When the baby is changed at home, simply open the bin, put the dirty nappy and wipes in the nappy wrapper, and the waste is individually wrapped and sealed within a multi-layered, anti-bacterial film - perfect for eliminating dirty nappy odour in the house. When the bin is full, simply empty into the household bin, so no mess, no fuss –which is the way changing baby should be.
